About Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan

Located in the scenic Osaka Bay area, Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan opened in May 1990. It was one of the largest public aquariums at the time, spanning 26,570 square meters. Designed by Peter Chermayeff, the facility’s layout follows a “ring of life” theme guiding visitors through the marine ecosystems of the Pacific Rim.

The Kaiyukan is home to approximately 29,000 creatures from over 620 species, displaying a breadth of marine biodiversity. The aquarium’s eight levels surround the central tank—a marvel of engineering containing 5.4 million liters of water. This tank represents the Pacific Ocean and is renowned for its whale sharks.

Tanks at the Kaiyukan represent different regions of the Pacific Rim, from the cold waters of Antarctica to the vibrant Great Barrier Reef. Notable exhibits include the “Forest of Japan,” with its waterfalls and greenery, and the “Tasman Sea” tank, where Pacific white-sided dolphins are featured. The “Jellyfish Galaxy” and the “North Pole” tank with ringed seals are other highlights.

The aquarium’s dedication to education and conservation is clear with its programs and a research center in Iburi, Kochi Prefecture, focusing on the study and breeding of sharks and rays. Kaiyukan’s conservation efforts have been recognized with awards from the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

The facility offers educational programs, guided tours, and interactive displays. Feeding demonstrations and animal shows throughout the day add to the experience.

The Kaiyukan is not only a tourist attraction but also an educational resource, highlighting the significance of marine ecosystems. Information is provided in multiple languages to assist international visitors.

As visitors finish their experience at the Kaiyukan, they can relax in the onsite restaurants or shop for souvenirs.
