Onaga Tenmangu Shrine is a Shinto shrine in Hiroshima City’s Higashi Ward, symbolizing both cultural devotion and resilience. It is a place for students seeking academic success and a reminder of the area’s turbulent past, having survived numerous challenges over the centuries.

Onaga Tenmangu Shrine was established in 1640, dedicated to deities significant in Shinto belief, including Sugawara Michizane, known for his scholarship and intellect. The shrine, historically significant in the region, has been maintained and reconstructed by successive regional rulers.

In 1926, the shrine was damaged by heavy rainfall and later restored. It was again damaged during World War II by the atomic bomb, yet it survived and provided refuge to bombing victims. Repairs were completed by 1947.

Today, Onaga Tenmangu Shrine is a part of Hiroshima’s heritage, known for its spiritual significance and as a symbol of perseverance. Visitors can admire the stone torii gate and the zuishinmon, reflecting the shrine’s historical and cultural importance.
